In any case, I kind of feel like I'm dealing with a lot of old ghosts. Partly this is because the dog isn't here, but mostly it's because I'm sorting through a ridiculous collection of old computer stuff that has somehow been maintained in the family, and basically everything from the old family Apple ][ is here. I can't tell you the nostalgia that swept over me as I flipped through those disk racks of old 5 1/4" floppies. The list of games I had memorized as a youth, and yet still flipped through the floppies anyway in case something magically fun and new showed up. Do you know how long it's been since I heard the word "ProDOS"? I mean, come on.
Does any of this stuff still work? Who knows. It's still pretty well-packed up, so I guess I'll take it back to Pburg and see what I can do there. And...then what? Even if it /does/ work, what am I going to do with an old Apple //e? (That's enhanced, suckaz; I had to put a special after-market chip on the motherboard so I could finally crank the old modem up to 2400 baud.) Anyone know the shelf-life of a 5 1/4" floppy? I've always been really careful about not touching them in the forbidden zone, ya know. Anyway. It seems a shame for the thing to end up on a scrapheap somewhere, but that's honestly the only future I can imagine for it. I'll confab with the family and see what they think. But regardless...here's to you, Apple ][. You were a fine machine.
Anyway. I'm spending at least the night here tonight, but probably won't hang around much longer than tomorrow. Not for this trip, anyway. This trip was mostly a stopgap to try and keep the plants alive, deal with the mail, and to move some goods around. I'll investigate the possibility of a longer stay down the road a bit. But damn, it's weird to be here.
So I'm going to try and amuse myself for the rest of the night. Tomorrow I've got some local errands to run and then I'm going to try and get the truck packed when I have some daylight to work with. Then I guess I'll just head back to Pburg and try to come up with a better plan for hanging out here.
In the meantime, let me share with you guys a blog entry from the last time I was holding down the fort here in SoJo. This is in celebration of my current return to power as Homestead Garrison, and also in memory of our recently departed family dog, who at least made my last time here adventurous. When life hands you turds, just make turdonade.
